First Day of Angel Falls Tour – Continued

View of Canaima Lagoon from behind Ucaima Falls

The first of many rainbows

There were sections of the river that it was impossible for us to navigate, and so we got out and trekked through some stunningly beautiful expanses of Canaima National Park. (The park supposedly served as the film set for a good portion of Jurassic Park, among other films.)

When we got back in the boat, I still was not prepared for the fact that we would be forging upstream against some pretty treacherous rapids in extremely shallow water. All this in a narrow wooden boat that had clearly seen better days.

We actually weren’t always successful in crossing the rapids. These videos show one set of rapids where we had to disembark after a number of unsuccessful attempts, so the guys could try again with a lighter boat:

1st Attempt: Unsuccessful

2nd Attempt: Just barely

The further upstream we traveled along the Rio Churun, the closer we got to the tepuys – the massive flat-topped/vertical-walled mountains this region is famous for.
