The Great Ocean Road, Part I

On Tuesday, April 3, Christine and I headed out for a 2-day driving tour of the Great Ocean Road. This is one of the most scenic coastal drives in Australia, and in the world, really. It starts about 1.5 hours south west of Melbourne and stretches along the coastline for nearly 200 miles, offering great views of the Southern Ocean.

Stopping for lunch in Lorne, one of the first towns along the coast

Some snapshots along the way...

They drive on the left-hand side in Australia, and of course that means the steering wheel is on the right. It's so disorienting for the first few hours. I was just glad we had an automatic...

Another photo of the coastline

Twilight in Apollo Bay, the town where we stayed after our first day of driving. You can see the Apollo Bay lighthouse on that little slip of land jutting out into the ocean.

The next morning we got up and continued our drive, stopping first at the Maits Rest Rainforest Walk. It was a pretty nifty half-hour stroll on a wooden boardwalk through the rainforest, with helpful little informative signposts along the way.

Isn't this photo sorta cool?
Next up, more Great Ocean Road!
