Last weekend in Melbourne: St. Kilda & the Zoo!

April 6-8 was our last weekend in Melbourne. On Saturday, we popped down to St. Kilda, a seaside suburb about 5 miles south of Melbourne's "Central Business District" or "CBD," as they call it here. (Our hotel was in the CBD and that's where we'd been spending most of our time.)

Here I am on the pier in St. Kilda. St. Kilda is very picturesque, located right on Port Phillip Bay, with views back towards downtown Melbourne. It was first settled by the city's elite, then it became Melbourne's red light district, and now it's sort of bohemian trendy.

Here I am, still on the pier.

Riding back from St. Kilda on the tram.

Another semi-artistic photo, this one taken in the South Yarra neighborhood of Melbourne, of miniature water fountains along the walkway (these are only a few inches tall).

On Sunday, we decided to hit the Melbourne Zoo. Here's Christine, waiting for the tram to take us there. (If you click for a bigger photo, you can see traffic and stuff reflected in her sunglasses, heehee.)

Giraffe, obviously.

Giraffes and zebras, obviously.
Okay, but seriously, how funny are these kangaroos? They totally look like they're just hanging out in the park or something.
He caught me staring at him.

Video clip of the same kangaroo.

After visiting the zoo, it was such gorgeous weather that we decided to have a drink on the balcony of the Westin lobby bar back in CBD.

After dinner in Chinatown, we spent a crazy amount of time trying to hunt down "The Croft Institute," a bar we had heard good things about, but knew it to be next-to-impossible to find, located, as it was, down a labyrinth of alleyways.
We finally found the bar at the end of this totally foreboding alley. Of course, it was closed. :-( I guess we'll have to hit it next time...
Next up, Cairns!
